What is an educational evaluation?

An educational evaluation is a thorough assessment of one’s thinking ability and academic achievement. The tests evaluate many aspects of learning, including attention, memory, reading, writing, spelling, math, executive functioning, and problem-solving skills.

An educational evaluation can also identify whether an individual has a learning disability, is eligible for special education, and would benefit from school-based accommodations and/or modifications.

An educational evaluation, however, is more than a series of tests, a written report, and a diagnosis.

I believe an educational evaluation:

  • places the child/adult client at the center.

  • creates a. partnership with me and the families, school, teachers, and others who help the child.

  • empowers the child/adult client as they will ultimately understand how (and why) they learn; acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses; and develop and use strategies that capitalize on their strengths to improve weaknesses.

  • ideally enables future growth and reduces frustration, and, is the beginning of improved levels of success in both school and life.
